Databases aren’t well understood by folks outside of the data professional world. SQL Server especially has a nice-looking interface, which makes database administration look easy.

It isn’t easy.

So how does a small DBA team manage an enterprise of ten, or a hundred, or 500 SQL Server instances? Any DBA who’s been in this position starts writing their own management system, using scripts, and jobs, and a lot more. The good news is, so did we, and we’ve been perfecting our system for many, many years.

Necessity and invention

Minion Enterprise is the first of its kind. It is not a performance monitor, not a backup tool. M.E. is the premiere enterprise management system: automation, alerting, configuration, and much more.

To get a large database environment under control, here’s what you need:

  • Automation
  • True, centralized, multi-server management
  • No agents on servers
  • Consolidation for simplicity
  • Brilliant alerting
  • Metadata accessible to DBAs
  • No more busy work

That’s what we made.

Easier enterprises

Here’s how it works: Install Minion Enterprise on one server – your “repository” server. Enter a list of SQL Server instances to the Servers table, and assign each one a service level: Gold, Silver, or Bronze. M.E. takes it from there.

In one day, you’ll have expansive, queryable data on versions and editions, hardware, drive capacity and availability, databases, files, objects, logins, users, error logs, and quite a lot more.

You’ll receive consolidated, actionable, configurable alerts for disk space, logins with high level permissions, missing backups and CheckDBs, new and retired databases, service status, and weak passwords.

You can configure alerts and report for anything you like. A few real-world examples:

  • Changes to sp_configure settings
  • File growth projections for disk space estimates
  • Availability Group failovers
  • Changes to object code
  • New clustered GUIDs, duplicate indexes, or heaps
  • Dropped objects
  • SQL Server or Windows instances that are too far behind in updates
  • Bad login attempts
  • Custom error log searches

Spreading the word

The term “enterprise management” has started to pop up around the web over the last few years, and that’s good. We invented the concept, and we’re glad the idea is getting around. Enterprise management is what happens when you leave one guy in charge of 1,000 SQL Server instances, and he still wants to go home on time. This is exactly how Minion Enterprise was born, and it worked.

We’ve seen junior DBAs use M.E. to conduct a full audit in an afternoon. We’ve seen amazing custom applications and integrations with our product.  We have installed it at every client site we work at, because it’s an absolutely invaluable tool.

And we’d like you to try it out today. Email our team at Sales@MinionWare.net and get a demo and a trial!
